What they say
Here is what former students say about courses, friendships, our library, youth and community work and preparation for mission.
Study and course work
"It was great, helped me to realise what I needed to know for ministry. Not saying it was easy, I put a lot of work into it. It was particularly daunting for me as a mature student returning to study after 35 years but the support was second to none."
"The youth and community work programme has a combination of both youth and community classes and theology classes. I really enjoyed the diverse range of assignments and forms of assessment which allowed all students to have an opportunity to flourish, whether class tests, presentations, reflective essays, reports or running a training event the wide range of assessments also gave opportunities for students to practice skills that will be key for their future careers and lives in ministry."
"It was a great chance to meet new people. From a networking point of view it’s fantastic, I now know lots of youth and community workers and future church leaders who will be situated all over Scotland, and even the world. Which is great - but I’ve also made some great friends who have journey along with me in my studies, and grown with me and shared frustrations with me and been able to help me in my ministry when times are tough."
"The friends I have made have impacted me profoundly. We have been able to share faith, academia and life together. The four years I have spent with my cohort have seen us journey through many different circumstances and experiences. It would have been an entirely different and perhaps less transformative experience without this deep sense of community."
Library and resources
"Great, every thing I needed for the course was there and more. Anything in particular needed was readily accessed. The librarian was a wealth of knowledge."
"The library is amazing! If there was a book you needed to look at for a class it was there. Sometimes I would just walk in to the library and have a look around to see what was new or interesting and read that (obviously after all the course reading was completed.) It is such a great resource, in fact one that I often end up talking about with others. It’s famous!"
Youth and community work programme
"This has been the biggest learning experience for me. Working in a church along with my studying has helped me hugely! As someone who is more practically minded than academic this helped put into practise what I was learning as I was learning. I didn’t have to stress over the theory for 4 years and go into a job to learn that what I understood the theory to be wasn’t what it actually was. I was able to wrestle with the theory then and there. If I understood something incorrectly I was able to see that first hand, and change that, get a correct understanding, and grow in my skills and gifting. For me, the learning didn’t just happen in the classroom, that was only the introduction - the real learning took place when I put that theory into practice."
"The practical elements of the course were the most important and fundamental in my own personal development as a youth work practitioner. It allowed me the opportunity to test what I was taught and practically live out what Jesus was teaching me on the course."
Sponsorship and support
"It wasn't until I entered the course that I found out I was dyslexic and both the
college and SAAS could not have been more supportive."
"SAAS were helpful in directing me towards the appropriate bursaries and grants in order to support my study. I was able to discuss with staff members on an ad hoc basis, payment plans and SAAS applications to which they displayed great knowledge and experience with."
Preparation for a life in mission and ministry
"You are already a missionary. You already have a ministry. Everyday when you go to school or work or Starbucks or the pub or to the gym or wherever you go you have a ministry. If you want help to focus that ministry and get some solid teaching under your belt and help in how make your ministry the best it can be from some excellent, and currently practising, lecturers - then come do the course. Even just a module or two will help you. But don’t wait till you have a degree to start your ministry. Let God use you now!"
The greatest adventure anyone can have is in serving God. The privilege of a life in mission or ministry doesn't have to be in the context of organised church, or charitable Christian organisations. Instead, serving God is in the choice to put God first in your life. That is the greatest adventure. As a result of doing the course I am now well equiped with what I see as the tools for ministry. I have also become more effective in my own church. My intention is to continue study to Masters level as I have become motivated and excited about study over the past three years. I must thank all the staff at the college for their encouragement and support.”
"The course was a great way to be built, empowered and challenged in a supportive Christian community. The practical nature of the course shaped me and helped prepare me for Christian ministry better than other courses or training would have."
